I first became interested in
horticulture as a young teenager. My father was a landscape gardener and
used to take me to work with him during my school holidays. Gardening can
be a very infectious pursuit, so it is no surprise that I very soon became
very enthused by the wonders of horticulture.
So
on
leaving school I pursued a career in this diverse industry initially working
with a large firm of landscape
contractors.
This provided yet more valuable experience in creating and maintaining
gardens and landscapes
I gained tremendous experience
and knowledge from working with so many qualified and experienced gardeners
at the same time as learning a valuable in sight to the running of a
landscaping firm. However I eventually decided I needed to reinforce this
experience by training for a formal qualification.
I undertook a 3 year full time
course studying horticulture at Writtle College. I achieved an HND in
Landscape,
Amenity
and
Recreation
Management.
The course encompassed many aspects of horticultural management and had a
heavy design influence too.
For many years after leaving
college I worked for local authorities designing schemes and managing
contracts for both landscape construction and maintenance.
In 1993 I became a freelance
landscape consultant specialising in landscape design and project management
and maintenance contract management
Today I am
still happiest using my 20 years experience to create new and exciting
landscapes.
